To wrap up some of our stories about the Young Adult Mission Trip to Florida January 1-7, here are just a few snapshots of things God did in, through, and around our group!
#1 – Becky, Josh, and Sarah gave up seats together on the plane and sat scattered around in order to let a family sit all together. This ended up also giving them a chance to interact with others on the plane.
#2 – The first part of our trip we stayed with host families! Whether it was feeding the boys really well in the morning or the girls’ host opening her home to the whole team to take over and make dinner dinner one night, we thank God for their hospitality and service to us while we served others!
#3 On Saturday we spent the whole day at Trinity Lutheran Church and School painting the outside of the school building. Around lunch time the church treasurer (also worked in the school) showed up and and said that she had been praying the whole way to work that she wouldn’t have to be alone in the building. She told Becky: “Not only are you serving us by painting which has needed done for a long time, but you are an answer to MY prayers today. Thank you!”
#4 We were reminded of God’s abundant, beautiful grace as we served in the Ice Cream Palace and got to give kids and families anything they want, any time they want. Open starting at 7:30 a.m., they can even have ice cream for breakfast if they want. (We know that God doesn’t always give us everything we want, but it was a beautiful picture as we saw how delighted we were to see them delighted, that our God delights to delight us! His grace for us is beyond abundant… kind of like giving a little girl a bowl full of sprinkles with her ice cream cone.)
#5 On the night our team found out about the sudden death of Christopher Hartnett, here was part of the passage of Scripture that had been planned weeks in advance to read that night: “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me… he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives… to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion–to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of despair. …” (Isaiah 61)
What beautiful words of comfort as we processed the tragedy and prayed for the family back in Buffalo! The crazy things was is that while verse 10 was the basis for our theme that day, “for some reason” when we planned the devotion, we decided to read the whole chapter. God knew. 🙂
#6 There were A LOT of tolls on the roads we drove each day. Unlike NY, you have to stop and pay them every couple of miles rather than just paying it all at once when you get off. A dollar here and a dollar there added up. We had some fun occasionally surprising the people behind us by paying their toll as well.
#7 Another place we saw God was in the fact that many of our meals were planned for us. The church provided lunch after VBS and dinner the night we painted. Our host homes made us breakfast and we could get dinner at Give Kids the World. Not only did this save money, but often time spent coordinating those details.
The places we saw God each day are more than we could count! Thank you again for supporting our young people as they serve God near and far! You can see more pictures and hear more stories both in the scrapbook that is in the lobby at church as well as during a slideshow that we will have in the services this weekend as an offering back to God for all He did in, through, and around us our week in FL. Thanks again!
Where have you seen God this week in your own life? Comment below, we’d love to know!
